Ironworkers Local 709 was established on July 31, 1947, in Savannah, Georgia, and currently, it represents more than 950 highly skilled tradespeople who operate across 48 counties in Georgia and South Carolina. Their service area spans from Savannah, Augusta, and just north of Brunswick in Georgia to Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Aiken in South Carolina.
The members of Local 709 are present on various job sites, including Savannah Sugar Refinery, International Paper, Georgia Ports Authority, Savannah River Site, Plant Hatch, Plant Vogtle, and many others.
Members of Local 709 undergo a rigorous 4-year Apprenticeship and Training Program, which includes classes on all facets of the iron-working trade. In addition to training, eligible members receive a range of benefits, such as high wages, medical and pension plans, disability, and vacation benefits.
