Founded in 1884, Steamfitters UA Local 638 (also known as the Enterprise Association of Steamfitters 638) is a labor union representing nearly 8,900 Welders, Sprinkler-fitters, and HVAC-R technicians. Its jurisdiction covers all general pipe fitting in New York City, including all five boroughs and all of Long Island, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties.
Members of Local 638 have access to a comprehensive five-year apprenticeship program at the Steamfitters Industry Training Center, offering diverse education, hands-on training, and on-the-job experience to prepare them for a successful career as steamfitters. Additionally, the local union provides multiple pension plans, health and welfare funds, a security benefit fund, and a vacation plan to its members.
